The golden age of conspiracy theories started with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. With distrust of appearances and the official versions, conspiracy theories were further popularized by the Watergate scandal in 1973-1974.
Urban legends and conspiracy theories seem to bring purpose to a sometimes messed up, cruel existence, empowering the helpless and terrified believers. New Order one world government, Zionist and Jewish cabals, the machinations attributed to the free masons and the Illuminati which all flourished from the 1970’s through present day.
Paranoid speculations exploded following the deaths of celebrities such as Princess Diana, while books like The Da Vinci Code, go on to sell millions of copies worldwide.
Britain’s prime minister, Tony Blair denounced the “Diana Death Industry”. He was referring to the tomes and films which exploited the wild rumors surrounding the fatal car crash in Paris in 1997.
However, there is more to conspiracy theories than mass psychology. It is also a very BIG business. Voluntary associations such as the KKK and the John Birch Society are past their prime, but still gross millions of dollars a year.
